japanese-crystalline-glaze-vase-tachikichi
Japanese Crystalline Glaze Vase, Kyoto, Late 20th Century, Tachikichi

A Japanese vase from Kyoto's Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki (京焼・清水焼) ceramic tradition, dating to the late 20th century and made by the long-established ceramics house Tachikichi (橘吉). Its defining feature is kesshō-yū (結晶釉), or crystalline glaze, a technique in which crystals grow naturally within the glaze during controlled kiln cooling. Because that growth cannot be predetermined, every firing produces a one-off surface.

On this vase, unusually large flower-like crystal blooms spread across the low rounded body. Under changing light, the ground shifts from warm ivory and champagne to pale lilac and blue-grey, so the surface changes subtly as the object is viewed from different angles.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1012/2887/2021/files/va-0014-japanese-crystalline-glaze-vase-tachikichi-06-hero.jpg?v=1788181819
