A matched pair of carved ebony candleholders from Uganda, c. 1980s. Each has a tall open spiral shaft rising from a broad circular base, creating a distinctive pierced silhouette.

The dark dense wood gives the slender forms visual weight, while the open carving keeps the pair light and graphic. Displayed together, the repeated spiral creates a strong vertical rhythm.
Context

Ebony is prized for its exceptional density, fine grain and naturally dark colour. Its hardness makes it demanding to carve, but it can hold crisp edges and take a smooth, lustrous finish, qualities that suit the open spiral work seen here. Across parts of Africa, ebony and related dense dark hardwoods have long been used for carved objects where the weight of the material and the polished surface are part of the visual effect.

Condition Notes

Good vintage condition with light surface wear and residual candle wax. One candleholder has an old, stable repair to a previous break; the pair remains stable.
