An ebony three-figure sculpture attributed to the Makonde carving tradition of Tanzania. Three elongated figures rise around and support a smooth sphere, carved as one compact openwork composition.

The dense dark wood and rounded upper mass contrast with the slender figures and negative spaces below, giving the sculpture a strong vertical presence despite its compact scale.
Context

The Makonde, from southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique, became internationally known in the mid-20th century for modern sculptural carving in dense dark hardwoods. Ebony and mpingo (African blackwood) were valued for their exceptional density, fine grain and deep colour, qualities that allow both crisp carving and a smooth, lustrous finish. These dense woods are demanding to work but particularly suited to elongated figures, open spaces and strongly polished surfaces. More broadly, ebony and related dark hardwoods have long been used across parts of Africa for carved objects in which the material’s weight, darkness and polished surface form an important part of the visual effect.
