An Alt Schönwald lidded sugar bowl in silver-plated porcelain, made in Germany and most likely dating to the 1950s–1970s.

The porcelain body is finished with a thin silver-plated layer. It has the sheen and tonal variation of silver, but remains porcelain underneath, giving it a softer and lighter presence than metalware.

Compact and sculptural in form, it was made for a tea or coffee service, and also works well as a small covered container.
Context

Silver-plated porcelain emerged through techniques that made it possible to apply silver to ceramic surfaces, creating an alternative to traditional silver hollowware. The result is not solid silver, but a thin metallic layer over porcelain.

Schönwald was a major Bavarian porcelain manufacturer, and the Alt Schönwald mark was used from 1927 onward.

Condition Notes

Very good condition for its age. Structurally sound, with no cracks, chips, or visible damage. Minor wear and light oxidation to the silver plating are present, consistent with age and use.

Vintage and antique objects may show signs of age and use. Each piece is carefully cleaned before listing. Patina and original surfaces are preserved where appropriate, and minor restoration may be carried out when necessary.

Care Guide

The silver-plated surface may gradually develop darker, sometimes slightly purple or blue-grey tarnish over time. This natural change can be left as part of the aged character of the piece.

For routine care, wipe gently with a soft dry cloth. If cleaning is needed, use a soft cloth with a small amount of diluted mild washing-up liquid and water, then wipe away any residue and dry immediately. Do not soak the object.

We recommend leaving tarnish undisturbed where possible. If a brighter silver finish is preferred, an anti-tarnish silver polishing cloth may be used very sparingly on the silver-plated surface only, with light pressure and without repeated rubbing. Avoid abrasive polishes, silver dips and harsh chemical cleaners, as repeated tarnish removal can gradually wear the plated surface.
