Pair of oak bookends produced in the Netherlands during the interwar period, 1920s–30s. The construction combines dark-stained oak with nickel-plated brass spheres, integrating geometric structure with contrasting materials. The restrained massing reflects object design associated with the Amsterdam School movement.
Context

The Amsterdam School was a Dutch design movement active from the 1910s through the 1930s, best known for expressive brick architecture but also reflected in furniture and interior objects. Decorative pieces from this context often emphasise sculptural geometry, solid wood construction, and small metal accents integrated into the form. Bookends in this style appear less frequently than French Art Deco decorative objects.

Condition Notes

Very good overall condition with strong, stable construction. The oak surfaces show light, age-appropriate wear. One nickel-plated sphere retains its original finish; the other shows wear with the brass beneath now visible. Structurally sound.
