A KUCH-marked studio ceramic vase by Elly and Wilhelm Kuch, made in Germany in the 1960s. The glazed earthenware body swells into a full, rounded bulbous form before drawing sharply into a narrow neck, creating a strong contrast between volume and vertical line. A pale cream ground is crossed by bold black and charcoal abstract bands.

Rather than sitting as a flat motif, the graphic decoration follows the curvature of the vase and shifts as the object is viewed from different angles. The impressed KUCH mark confirms the workshop attribution.
Context

Elly and Wilhelm Kuch worked together from the 1950s in Burgthann, Franconia, developing a recognised post-war ceramic practice spanning vessels, sculptural objects and architectural ceramics. Their collaborative working method is documented in estate material, with Elly responsible for form and Wilhelm for decoration on comparable pieces. The workshop received repeated international recognition during the 1960s and 1970s, including awards at Faenza, and both artists became members of the Académie Internationale de la Céramique. This vase reflects that partnership particularly clearly, pairing a resolved sculptural volume with graphic surface decoration.
