Pair of Goldkant Salbo cocoon table lamps, Germany, c. 1960s–70s. Each lamp has a rounded sprayed-resin cocoon shade over a wire frame, set on a reflective chrome-effect plastic base with a slim central stem.

The shades have a soft off-white tone with ribbed panel construction, giving each lamp a quiet lantern-like form. The cocoon membrane diffuses light gently, while the reflective base adds a sharper mid-century material contrast.
Context

Cocoon lighting developed from post-war experiments with sprayed synthetic resin over wire frames, creating lightweight forms with a soft, diffused glow. The material is part of the character here: slightly irregular, translucent, and structured by the frame beneath.

The chrome-effect plastic bases are typical of this kind of period lighting, where new industrial materials were used for lightness, reflection, and accessible domestic design.

Condition Notes

Very good vintage condition overall. Both off-white cocoon shades have minor age marks, small specks, and natural surface irregularities to the sprayed-resin membrane; one shade shows slight warping to one side. The internal frames appear clean, without visible green oxidation. Chrome-effect bases show minor surface wear and light marks. The lamps are working at the time of listing and appear to retain original wiring, left as found; please check local electrical compatibility before regular use.

Vintage and antique objects may show signs of age and use. Each piece is carefully cleaned before listing. Patina and original surfaces are preserved where appropriate, and minor restoration may be carried out when necessary.

Dust the cocoon shades gently with a soft dry cloth or a very soft brush. Avoid water, solvents, alcohol, abrasive cleaners, or rubbing the sprayed-resin surface, as the membrane can be delicate. The chrome-effect bases may be wiped lightly with a soft dry cloth; avoid aggressive polishing, as the reflective finish may scratch or wear.
