Product Information

A large hammered copper and carved wood vase attributed to Gustave Serrurier-Bovy, Belgium, c. 1900.

The spherical body is constructed from hand-hammered copper panels articulated by applied carved wooden bands and ring handles, raised on a circular foot and fitted with a removable internal metal liner. The disciplined integration of wood and copper reflects the structural clarity associated with Belgian Art Nouveau design around 1900.

Context

Gustave Serrurier-Bovy (1858–1910) was a central figure in Belgian Art Nouveau and an early advocate of Arts and Crafts principles in continental Europe. His work is recognised for structural clarity and the deliberate integration of wood and metal within unified compositions. Vessels combining hammered copper with carved wooden elements are associated with his circle and workshop production around 1900.

Height: 35 cm | Width: 35 cm | Depth: 32 cm | Weight: 5 kg

Condition Notes

The copper has developed a even, darkened tone with areas of natural green patina consistent with age. Minor dents to the body are visible and typical for hand-hammered copper of this period; structural integrity remains sound. The internal metal liner is present; the rim shows slight edge wear yet remains usable.

Vintage and antique objects may show signs of age and use. Each piece is carefully cleaned before listing. Patina and original surfaces are preserved where appropriate, and minor restoration may be carried out when necessary.
