A large lead crystal vase with a 925 sterling silver rim by Hermann Bauer, Germany, mid 20th century. The rim is marked HB and 925 sterling, confirming the mounted rim as sterling silver.

Its appeal lies in the balance between weight and transparency: a substantial vessel that reflects light through the cut surface, finished by the darker line of the silver rim.

The piece is suitable for use as a flower vase, or for display as a decorative glass and silver object.
Context

Lead crystal is a type of glass made with lead oxide to increase weight, clarity, and light refraction. Its higher refractive quality gives the vase more brilliance than standard glass, with the ribbed body catching and bending light through the surface.

This piece is suitable for normal handling and decorative display, including use with flowers. As with lead crystal generally, it should not be used for serving or storing food or drink.

Hermann Bauer was a German silverware maker associated with Schwäbisch Gmünd, a long-standing centre for silver and jewellery production.

Condition Notes

Very good vintage condition overall. The sterling silver rim has been gently polished and shows fine previous polishing marks. The crystal is clear and bright, with no major chips, cracks, or clouding noted. Very light surface marks and fine hairline scratches are visible on close inspection, consistent with age and careful use.
