Product Information

Zuishō (瑞祥), meaning ‘a sign of good fortune’, is the name of this Japanese bronze flower vase associated with metalworker Hirose Yūdō (廣瀬祐銅). It was created as a commemorative gift to honour those who had made important contributions to a school of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging.

The vase has a broad, shallow flared rim, a tapered body and two suspended ring handles. At the front, a gold-toned emblem features the character 真 (shin), meaning ‘truth’. Its surrounding geometric and pine-needle forms draw on traditional symbolism connecting heaven, earth and humanity.

The vase retains its original Japanese explanatory documents, including a text dated 7 January 1988, detailing the meaning and purpose behind its creation. An original design drawing shows the same distinctive profile, ring handles and emblem, providing a direct connection between the documented design and the finished object. The original wooden presentation box and yellow protective cloth are also included.
Context

Other surviving works associated with Hirose Yūdō include substantial copper-alloy flower basins and upright flower vases made for Japanese floral arrangements. Some examples bear the maker inscription 祐銅造, meaning ‘made by Yūdō’.
