A Japanese cast-copper vase decorated with zōgan (象嵌), a metal-inlay technique in which fine channels are cut into the surface and filled with contrasting metal. A small gold-coloured star and delicate linear inlay create a precise graphic accent against the deep reddish-brown copper.

The tall hourglass silhouette is exceptionally clean and geometric. Rather than covering the form, the inlay sits lightly across it, sharpening the vase’s distinctly modernist character.
Context

Zōgan has a long history in Japanese metalwork. Takaoka, a city in Toyama Prefecture and one of Japan’s historic metalworking centres, developed its own metal-inlay tradition after local craftsmen learned the technique from Kanazawa metalworkers in the early Meiji period (1868–1912). The technique became an important part of Takaoka metalwork, combining cast copper with contrasting metals such as gold or silver.
