Product Information

Japanese Takaoka cast copper-alloy flower vase, signed Shūgetsu / 秀月, Japan, Shōwa period, mid-late 20th century. The original wooden storage box is inscribed 鋳銅花瓶, meaning cast copper-alloy flower vase.

The vase is defined by its tall faceted form, clean vertical planes, and dark reddish-brown patinated surface. The colour moves between warm copper-brown and deeper almost black tones, giving the piece a quiet geometric rhythm.

Its strength is in the balance of simple form, weight, and surface. The piece can be used as a flower vase with a liner, or displayed as a Japanese metalwork object.

Context

Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, has been one of Japan’s major metalwork centres since the early 17th century, known for cast copper-alloy objects including flower vessels, tea utensils, incense burners, Buddhist fittings, and decorative works.

This piece belongs to the mid-late Shōwa tradition of Japanese decorative metalwork, where controlled patination, cast detail, and clean geometric form give everyday vessels a more sculptural presence.

Vintage and antique objects may show signs of age and use. Each piece is carefully cleaned before listing. Patina and original surfaces are preserved where appropriate, and minor restoration may be carried out when necessary.

Care Guide

Clean with a soft dry cloth for regular care. If used with water or fresh flowers, use a removable liner and dry thoroughly after use. Do not use copper polish, brass polish, acidic cleaners, abrasive cloths, or soaking, as these may disturb the dark patinated surface.
