Product Information

Japanese janome-mon bronze vase attributed to Murata Yoshio (村田吉生), Shōwa period, Japan, c. 1960s. Cast bronze with dark green patina, twin loop handles, flared neck, and a band of raised circular “janome” (snake-eye) motifs.

The design was commissioned to Murata Yoshio, a council member of Nitten (Japan’s national fine arts exhibition) and former Director of the Takaoka Metal Arts Institute. Accompanied by original signed tomobako (wooden presentation box), printed artist biography, and explanatory documentation.

Context

Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, has been Japan’s principal bronze casting centre since the early 17th century, when metal workshops were established under the Maeda domain. By the Shōwa period, Takaoka developed into a recognised studio craft centre aligned with national exhibition culture, including Nitten. This vase reflects that mid-20th-century studio bronze tradition, where classical vessel forms were refined through controlled patination and measured ornament.
