Sculptural Overlapping-Arc Bamboo Flower Basket, Japan, c. 1960s–80s

Sculptural Overlapping-Arc Bamboo Flower Basket, Japan, c. 1960s–80s

€255,00 EUR
Product Information

A Japanese handwoven bamboo flower basket, or hanakago (花籠), probably dating to the Shōwa period, c. 1960s–80s. Deep brown and black bamboo bands sweep upwards in overlapping, almost architectural curves, with fine natural-coloured edges tracing the geometry.

The craftsmanship is particularly evident in the finely interlaced and bound bamboo strips. Rooted in traditional Japanese flower arranging, or ikebana (生け花), its bold sculptural form also has a distinctly modern presence. A removable black plastic insert moulded into a bamboo-like shape is included.
