A signed Japanese bronze centrepiece vase by Yashima Boshū (八島望舟, 1925–2001), dating to c. 1960s–80s. The broad, low form is wrapped with large raised gurimon spirals, giving the dark bronze surface a strongly worked, dimensional character. The underside is signed 望舟.

Its combination of scale, visual weight and richly modelled surface allows the piece to hold its own as a centrepiece, while retaining its original function as a flower vessel.
Context

Born in Takaoka, one of Japan’s major metalworking centres, Boshū became a significant figure in the city’s post-war metalwork tradition. He was active in regional craft organisations, and works by him are held by Takaoka City Art Museum. His signed bronze vessels also continue to appear in specialist European Asian-art auctions, including Galerie Zacke in Vienna.

Condition Notes

Very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. No dents or cracks.
