Three-legged stool associated with Lobi carving traditions of Burkina Faso, West Africa. Carved from a single block of dense hardwood, the concave seat rests on three legs, including a slightly projecting front leg. The surface shows long use, with softened edges, visible tool marks, natural radial cracking, and deep patina across the wood.
Context

Three-legged stools were everyday personal objects within Lobi communities of West Africa, used for sitting, resting, and carrying during travel. Their compact size and durable construction made them practical domestic items while their sculptural form reflects the direct relationship between function, material, and carving tradition.

Examples of similar stools are held in major museum collections, where they are presented both as functional objects and as sculptural forms.

Condition Notes
