Product Information

An Akahada-yaki (赤膚焼, Akahada ware) chawan (茶碗, tea bowl) associated with the Rakusai (楽斎) lineage of Kohaku Kiln (香柏窯) in Yamato-Koriyama, Nara. The compact, slightly asymmetric bowl has a warm flowing glaze that shifts through amber, olive and charcoal tones, with an unglazed foot exposing the quieter texture of the clay body.

The bowl itself bears an incised foot signature 「赤膚山楽斎」 and is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako (共箱, maker’s fitted storage box), inscribed 「赤膚燒茶碗 楽斎造」. Together, the signed bowl and box strongly support its connection to the Rakusai kiln lineage.
Context

Akahada-yaki (赤膚焼, Akahada ware) is a historic ceramic tradition of Nara and Yamato-Koriyama, closely connected with tea culture and traditionally counted among the Seven Kilns associated with tea master Kobori Enshū (小堀遠州). Kohaku Kiln (香柏窯) was entrusted to the Onishi family, who received the hereditary potter’s art name Rakusai (楽斎); the lineage continues today under the eighth Rakusai. The exact Rakusai generation responsible for this bowl has not been established.
